Second day of 72-hr Maoist bandh peaceful

Ranchi. The second day of Maoist-sponsored 72-hour bandh in four states to protest special counter-insurgency operations by Central Forces passed off peacefully today.

The shutdown mainly affected the movement of trains, long-distance vehicles and operations in mining sectors in Jharkhand, it was learnt.

Police said there was no report of any untoward inicident in any part of the state.

Three other states were - West Bengal, Orissa and Bihar - which came within the purview of the Maoist-sponsored bandh.

On the one hand, reports from Maoist-dominated Lohardaga, Chatra, Latehar informed that loading and unloading of bauxite continued to remain affected.

On the other hand, reports from Bokaro said there was no impact of the bandh in the main city but life was affected in Bermo area.

In another Maoist-dominated Palamu district, there was no report of any untoward incident, except for the killing of a CPI(ML) leader late last night. Police in the district said the murder was not ''linked with bandh''.

Security was beefed up in all the Maoist-dominated areas. It may be mentioned that officially 18 out of 24 districts were Maoist-dominated in Jharkhand.

Meanwhile, the Garib Rath Express between Ranchi and New Delhi was cancelled.

Yesterday, Palamu Up and Down Link Express, Gomo Passenger, Barwadih Passenger and Dehri Passenger trains were cancelled while around five long-distance inter-state express trains' routes were diverted.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will hold a meeting tomorrow in Kolkata to discuss the operations with the Chief Ministers of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa.
