Srinagar. A captain of the Indian Army was killed Thursday in a gunfight with suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in a south Kashmir village, a defence official said.
 

Captain Deepak Sharma was killed in the ongoing battle which began Wednesday and resumed Thursday morning in Dadsara village, 35 km from here in Pulwama district, the official said.

One militant was also killed in the exchange of fire but his body was yet to be recovered. Two soldiers and a policeman have been injured, police said.

Security forces believe that three militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen were hiding in a house which has been surrounded.

The gunfight started Wednesday when troops of the Rashtriya Rifles and police received a tip-off about the presence of guerrillas in the house.

The operation was suspended in the night and resumed with heavy gunfire soon after the first light.

This is the second time in less than 10 days that an army officer has been killed in Kashmir.
