Over 40 lakh children to be covered under pulse polio scheme

An estimated 41 lakh children are expected to be covered in the ensuing National Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) round which is scheduled to be held from February 7 in all the districts of Haryana.

While stating this here today, a spokesman of the Health Department said that all arrangements for the successful implementation of the upcoming National IPPI round had been made.

A total of 16,145 IPPI booths would be set up at locations convenient to the community.

These booths would be manned by more than 64,500 vaccinators drawn from Health, ICDS and Education departments, besides NGOs, IMA, Self Help Groups and community volunteers. About 3200 supervisors would be pressed into service to oversee the functioning of the vaccination teams and to ensure that no child was left un-immunised. Nodal officers from the state headquarter and independent monitors from PGIMS Rohtak would also monitor the activity to ensure quality and complete coverage.

He said that the focus during February round would be to ensure coverage of each and every 0-5 year child especially those residing in slums, labour colonies inhabited by migratory population, brick-kilns, children of industrial labour, rice-shellers, stone crushers, construction sites, nomadic population and children in transit at bus-stands, Railway stations, Hatt-Bazaars and market places.

He said that whole hearted support and participation of the community was essential for the success of this programme to stop polio virus transmission and occurrence of cases. The entire community was thus requested to bring all targeted age children to their respective locality booths for Pulse Polio drops on February 7.

He said that satisfactory progress had been made in the country as also in the state as a result of concerted efforts made for improving the quality of Pulse Polio Programme. So far, in the year 2009, 732 cases had been confirmed in the country out of which 710 cases were from UP and Bihar and four cases had so far been confirmed in Haryana which were one each from Faridabad and Panipat and two from Mewat.

He said that to prevent the occurrence of Polio cases in the state, it was of paramount importance that during the February and subsequent rounds, no child of 0-5 year age group remains without receiving Pulse Polio drops. For Polio Eradication, Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) was one of the important strategies besides Routine Immunization programme.

With every successive round of Pulse Polio Immunisation, the areas of Poliovirus circulation get reduced in numbers as well as in extent.
